Central Gernika

The heart of the town brings together the Assembly House with the tree, the Peoples of Europe park and the Peace Museum, all a few streets apart. Here too are the pedestrian streets with pintxo bars and the squares where daily life happens. You can walk it from end to end.

The Euskotren station on the Bilbao to Bermeo line is right in the centre, so you can arrive from Bilbao by train and carry on to Mundaka or Bermeo without a car. It suits those with one or two nights who want to see the essentials.

Forua and the Urdaibai estuary

Forua, right next to Gernika to the north, looks out over the estuary and the marshes of the Urdaibai reserve. It is a small village of farmhouses and meadows, and it has its own Euskotren halt. It suits those looking for calm, birdwatching or cycling and walking along the shore, while still having dinner in Gernika.

Kortezubi and Oma

To the north-east, the Kortezubi valley hides the Santimamiñe cave and the painted forest of Oma, Agustín Ibarrola's work on the pine trunks. The area is one of scattered farmhouses and agritourism stays, with narrow roads and lots of green. You need a car, but you gain silence and hill walks from the door, something families and walkers appreciate.

Arteaga and the eastern side of the estuary

Heading down the right bank of the estuary you come to Arteaga, with its neo-Gothic-style castle, and further on the roads leading to Ibarrangelu and Laga beach. It is a rural base for combining the town with the beach and viewpoints over the marshes. It suits those travelling by car who want beach and countryside on the same stay.
