Medieval quarter

La Almendra, the almond, as Vitoria calls its old town because of its shape, climbs in parallel streets up to the cathedral of Santa María. Cuchillería and Correría have the liveliest pintxo bars, and Calle Pintorería, which everyone calls Kutxi, fills with young people at weekends. Escalators take care of part of the slope, welcome with luggage. If you like going out for pintxos at night, it will all be on your doorstep.

Ensanche and Florida park

At the foot of the hill lies the Ensanche, with the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, the Plaza de España and the Arquillos linking it to the upper town. Streets such as Dato and Postas are pedestrianised and full of shops, and next to the new cathedral of María Inmaculada is Florida park. It is flat and everything is close, including the railway station. Families and those coming for a meeting or conference choose it.

Best-rated in this area: Kora Green City - Aparthotel Passivhaus, with a score of 9.0 from 8,965 reviews.

Paseo de la Senda and Mendizorrotza

South of the centre, the Paseo de la Senda and the Paseo de Fray Francisco form a tree-lined corridor with mansions and the Fine Arts Museum. Beyond are the Mendizorrotza stadium and the road towards Armentia. It is a green residential area, ideal for running or strolling without cars, and the centre is reached on foot along the promenade itself.

Best-rated in this area: Silken Ciudad de Vitoria, with a score of 8.7 from 13,761 reviews.

Lakua and the north

Lakua is a modern district of wide avenues, home to the Basque Government headquarters. The tram links it to the centre in a short ride, and the motorway exits are close by. It suits those travelling for work or by car who want to avoid traffic in the centre. From here the Anillo Verde, the green ring of parks and paths around the city, is also close at hand.

Best-rated in this area: Duque de Wellington, with a score of 8.3 from 1,339 reviews.
