What the Northern Way is like
It follows the Cantabrian coast from Irún, through San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander and Gijón, and at Ribadeo it enters Galicia and heads inland to join the French Way at Arzúa. It’s about 820 km, with more climbing and fewer pilgrims than the French Way.
Where to sleep
As it passes through cities and seaside towns, there are lots of hotels, although in July and August prices go up and they fill with beach holidaymakers. San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Llanes and Gijón have plenty of choice, and in towns such as Deba, Comillas or Ribadesella it’s best to book.
When to go
June and September combine good weather with fewer tourists. Summer is when it rains least, but the coast is packed. Out of season, many beach hotels close.
Getting around
The narrow-gauge coastal railway and buses link most of the stages, so you can skip sections. Bilbao, Santander and Asturias have airports.
