Staying near Neuschwanstein Castle: what you need to know

What is Neuschwanstein?

It is the fairy-tale castle that King Ludwig II of Bavaria had built on a rock facing the Alps, which inspired Sleeping Beauty’s. Next to it is Hohenschwangau Castle, where he spent his childhood.

Getting around from here

Tickets are timed and best bought in advance. From Hohenschwangau the walk up takes about 30 minutes; Mary’s Bridge has the most famous view.

When the hotels fill up

In summer and on holiday weekends hotels in Schwangau and Füssen fill up. In winter there are fewer people and the castle under snow is beautiful.

Which area to choose

In Hohenschwangau and Schwangau, at the foot of the castle, you can go up first thing. Füssen has more hotels, restaurants and the railway station.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Füssen city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Füssen.
