Near the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances there are simple hotels, pensioni and B&Bs. They let you get in first thing, and the Circumvesuviana station is a short walk away.
Centre and sanctuary
Around the square of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary there are hotels, apartments and restaurants. It is the liveliest part of the modern town and a few minutes' walk from the ruins.
Castellammare di Stabia
A few minutes away by train, by the sea, it has hotels and apartments with more local life. From here you can also visit the Roman villas of Stabiae and carry on to the Sorrento peninsula.
Ercolano
Between Pompeii and Naples, Ercolano offers small places to stay near the ruins of Herculaneum. It is a good base for climbing Vesuvius and combining the two sites by train.
