Staying near the Colosseum: what you need to know

What is the Colosseum?

The Flavian Amphitheatre, from the 1st century, is the great symbol of ancient Rome. Next to it are the Roman Forum and the Palatine, which are visited on the same ticket.

Getting there

Metro line B stops at Colosseo and reaches Termini in two stops. From here you can walk to the Forum, Piazza Venezia and the Monti district.

When rooms are hardest to find

From spring to autumn and on long weekends. It is a very touristy area, with high prices at hotels with views of the amphitheatre.

Which area to choose

Monti, to the north, is a charming district with shops, restaurants and small hotels. Celio, to the south, is quieter. Towards the Esquilino and Termini, prices drop.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Rome city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Rome.
