Where to stay in Rome: the best areas

Historic centre

Between the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori there are boutique hotels, guesthouses and apartments in old buildings. It is the most expensive area, but you can walk almost everywhere and the squares stay lively at night.

Monti and Termini

Monti, next to the Colosseum and the Forum, is a district of sloping streets with small shops, bars and holiday flats. Towards Termini station there are hotels of every category, handy if you arrive by train or by bus from the airport, with the metro close by.

Trastevere

Across the Tiber, Trastevere has apartments and small hotels in ivy-covered houses on cobbled streets. It is the place for dinner in a trattoria and a night out, although it has no metro and some streets are noisy.

Prati and the Vatican

Next to Vatican City, Prati is a district of wide avenues, quieter and more residential, with mid-sized hotels and good shops. St Peter's and the Vatican Museums are within walking distance and the metro takes you to the centre in a few minutes.
