Where to stay in Orihuela: the best areas

Historic centre and the cathedral

The strip between the river Segura and the hills holds the Cathedral of El Salvador, the churches of Santiago and Santas Justa y Rufina, the Rubalcava Palace and the Diocesan Museum. Staying here, you can link almost every visit on foot and have squares with terraces and bars nearby for dinner. It is the natural choice for a cultural trip of one or two days.

Accommodation is limited, and at Easter the processions fill the streets, with floats you can see in the Holy Week Museum the rest of the year. If you are going then, book well in advance.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Palacio de Tudemir, with a score of 8.5 from 1,881 reviews.

Santo Domingo and San Isidro

At the western end of the old town, at the foot of the hill, are the Colegio de Santo Domingo and the San Isidro quarter, with its murals dedicated to Miguel Hernández. His house museum is also close by. It is a quieter, more residential area, within easy walking distance of the monuments and the slope up to the Seminary of San Miguel.

Ensanche and the station

Across the river lies modern Orihuela, with wide avenues, shops and Orihuela-Miguel Hernández train station, with connections to Alicante and Murcia. It suits business trips, people arriving without a car and those after city hotels with more services. Cross one of the bridges and you are in the historic centre after a short walk.

The Palm Grove and the huerta

On the outskirts, by the Palmeral de San Antón and the farm tracks of the Vega Baja, there are country houses and places to stay with gardens. They are quiet and roomy for families, but you need a car. In spring the palm grove is a good place for an evening walk. If you are after the beach, the municipality’s coast is far from the town and it is better to stay there directly.
