What to see in La Manga del Mar Menor

Must-sees

La Manga del Mar Menor is a strip of sand about twenty kilometres long separating the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean. Its appeal is choosing between two seas each day: the Mar Menor, with calm, shallow, warm water, ideal for families and water sports, and the Mediterranean, with more surf and open beaches. In the north, around the Encañizadas, the strip narrows and is quieter.

At the southern end is Cabo de Palos, with its lighthouse, fishing harbour and rice and fish restaurants. Off the cape lies the Cabo de Palos and Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, one of the best diving spots on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Very close too is Calblanque Regional Park, with dunes, salt pans and undeveloped coves.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are not usual in La Manga, as there is no historic centre to walk. Guided activities and excursions are the norm. The most interesting are dives and snorkelling in the marine reserve, boat trips to the islands of the Mar Menor, and kayak or paddleboard routes on the lagoon. It is also easy to book a guided visit to Cartagena, half an hour’s drive away, usually including the Roman Theatre and the old town.

How long to spend

If you are coming for a beach holiday, a week is typical. To see the essentials, two or three days are enough: one for Cabo de Palos and a sea activity, another for Calblanque and a third for Cartagena. Keep an evening free to watch the sunset over the Mar Menor.

Where to stay

The southern part, between the start of La Manga and Cabo de Palos, is the best base if you want to get around: it has more services, restaurants and a quick road out to Cartagena and Calblanque. Cabo de Palos is a good option if you are interested in diving or prefer a fishing-village feel. The central and northern parts are quieter with less crowded beaches, although journeys take longer because there is only one main road.
