What is the medina?

The medina is the walled old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a maze of souks, mosques, palaces such as the Bahia and riads, traditional courtyard houses turned into small hotels.

Getting around from here

Jemaa el-Fna square and the Koutoubia are in the middle of the medina, and the souks start just north of the square. The modern Gueliz district and the Majorelle Garden are about 15 minutes away by taxi.

When the hotels fill up

From October to April, and especially at Easter, in December and at New Year, the smallest riads book up early. July and August are very hot and prices are often lower.

Which area to choose

Riads near Jemaa el-Fna and the Koutoubia are easiest to reach by taxi. Those in Mouassine and north of the souks are quieter, and those in the Kasbah are close to the Saadian Tombs.
