Cathedral square

The heart of Mondoñedo is the square opening in front of the cathedral, framed by arcades and façades bearing coats of arms. Staying in these streets lets you go out at night into a silent town, with the stone lit up and the square's bars just round the corner. The Northern Way of St James also passes through here, so you'll see pilgrims early in the morning.

In the bakeries in the centre you can buy Mondoñedo tart to take home. It suits travellers without a car and anyone who prefers to see everything on foot.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Montero, with a score of 9.2 from 743 reviews.

Os Muíños

Heading down from the centre you reach this neighbourhood of modest houses by the water, where remains of the old mills still stand. It's the most traditional part of town and very close to the square. If you like wandering aimlessly and hearing the river from your window, it's a good place to sleep.

Best-rated in this area: LUMEN ALBERGUE, with a score of 9.6 from 354 reviews.

Os Remedios and the Alameda

At the other end of the old town, the Alameda dos Remedios is a large tree-lined esplanade in front of the sanctuary. It's an open area with a bit more room to park and a quick way out to the main road. It suits families with children, who have space to play, and those arriving on the Cantabrian motorway, which passes very close. The cathedral is a short walk away.

Valley villages

Around the town are rural parishes with restored farmhouses, vegetable plots and oak woods. From them you're a quick drive from Mondoñedo, with the road to Vilanova de Lourenzá and its monastery close at hand. They are the best choice for stays of several days combining the interior with the beaches of A Mariña, though you'll need your own car.
