Inside the walls

The walled town covers the whole spur above the Júcar, with the castle at the tip. Between the Plaza Mayor, the church of Santa María and San Juan Bautista there are a few cobbled streets holding almost all the accommodation. You sleep with the art centre and the viewpoints a few steps away, and at night the village belongs only to those staying.

It suits couples and unhurried travellers. There are few beds, so for a long weekend it is best to book early. The streets are narrow and sloping, so travel light.

By the entrance gates

The approach road passes through several lines of walls before reaching the village. Staying near that entrance makes it easier to leave the car, as space inside is minimal. It is also a good starting point for the paths that run down to the river and loop round the meander, with fine views of the Torre del Campo.

The Alarcón reservoir

The reservoir is very close to the village and in summer draws people for swimming, canoeing or fishing. On its shores and in the nearby countryside are rural houses with land, designed for families and groups. A car is essential here, but driving up to the castle for dinner is a short trip. In high summer it is the liveliest area around.

Villages near the A-3

Alarcón is a stone’s throw from the A-3 motorway between Madrid and Valencia. The area’s villages by the motorway have simple places to stay, useful if you are stopping overnight on a long journey and want to see the walled village in the morning before moving on. It is the option for anyone who cannot find a room inside the walls. That way you don’t spend the night by the motorway and arrive rested for the visit.
