The present village grew up around the Royal Factories of San Juan de Alcaraz, and that is still the centre of daily life: bars, shops, restaurants and the brass museum. Riópar Viejo

The old village sits on a height above the valley, with the church, the remains of the castle and restored stone houses. It has few residents and a very intimate feel. It suits couples and those who want views and total calm. For shopping or dinner you will have to drive down to the new village. In return, a walk among the castle ruins at dusk is one of the loveliest moments of the visit.

On the way to Los Chorros

The road following the river Mundo to its source runs through pine forests and fields, with farmhouses, rural houses and some campsites. Staying on this stretch puts you very close to the walkways and viewpoints of Los Chorros, so you can arrive first thing, before the car park fills. It is the area preferred by hikers and families with children who want to spend the day outdoors.

Mountain hamlets

Across the municipality and its neighbours, small hamlets and farmhouses are scattered through the Sierra de Alcaraz. There are almost no services and the roads are winding, but the silence and the night sky make up for it. Bring a car, supplies and a will to walk. It is the option for those coming for several days to hike the Calar del Mundo or explore the Sierra del Segura, who do not need bars nearby at night.
