Historic centre and Calle Mayor

Calle Mayor links the Infantado Palace with the Plaza Mayor and the town hall, and the life of the centre gathers around it. From here you can walk to the co-cathedral of Santa María, the church of Santiago and the Alamín tower, one of the remains of the old wall. There are shops, cafés and bars serving sharing plates.

It is the most convenient area if you are coming to see the city over a weekend and prefer to leave the car parked.

Best-rated in this area: AC Hotel Guadalajara by Marriott, Spain, with a score of 8.4 from 2,800 reviews.

Parque de la Concordia

South of the old town, Concordia park, with its bandstand, is the locals’ classic stroll. Very close is the Pantheon of the Countess of La Vega del Pozo and the San Diego Foundation, a building that surprises many visitors. The area is residential, with good streets for walking, and leaves you a step from the monuments and the bars of the centre.

Best-rated in this area: BREZO Apartamentos turisticos, with a score of 9.3 from 197 reviews.

The station and the river Henares

The train station is across the Henares, north of the old town. Local C-2 trains run from there to Alcalá de Henares and Madrid, so staying nearby is useful if you are combining Guadalajara with trips to the capital. You walk up to the centre across the river by the Arab bridge. Bear in mind that high-speed trains stop at Guadalajara-Yebes, a different station far from the city.

Outskirts by the A-2

If you plan to explore the province, places on the outskirts with direct access to the A-2 motorway save you traffic jams and make parking easy. They are the usual choice for business travellers or those wanting an early start to Sigüenza, Pastrana or the black-architecture villages such as Tamajón or Valverde de los Arroyos.
