Where to stay in Belmonte: the best areas

Old town by the collegiate church

The heart of the village is around the Collegiate Church of San Bartolomé. From here you can walk the surviving stretches of wall, its gates and the house attributed to Fray Luis de León. Here are the bars and restaurants where you can try Manchego cheese or a game dish.

Places to stay are rural houses and small hotels in stone buildings. They work well for couples and for those arriving in the late afternoon who drop their bags and stroll out to dinner. The streets are narrow, so ask beforehand where to leave the car.

Best-rated in this area: El Paseo, with a score of 9.3 from 939 reviews.

The castle slope

The castle crowns the San Cristóbal hill, above the houses. The streets climbing towards it are the quietest and some have views over the plain. If you stay in this part, you can be at the castle gate as soon as it opens and see it without groups.

It is the area most liked by travellers looking for sunset photos and very quiet nights. The slopes are short but steep.

Outskirts and country houses

Outside the village are farmhouses and estates among cereal fields and vineyards. They usually have a patio or garden, and some accept pets. They are for families or groups of friends travelling by car who want space. From many of them you can see the castle's outline on the hill, and the village is just a moment away.

Villaescusa de Haro

A few kilometres away is Villaescusa de Haro, a small village with the Gothic chapel of the Asunción in its parish church. Sleeping here is an alternative when Belmonte fills up in spring with the medieval tournament, and leaves you a short drive from the castle. Choice is limited, but the atmosphere is even more village-like.
