Where to stay in Sigüenza: the best areas

Between the cathedral and the castle

The upper part of Sigüenza climbs a slope, with the cathedral below and the castle at the very top. On the way you pass the arcaded Plaza Mayor and the streets of Calle Mayor, Travesaña Alta and Travesaña Baja, the medieval heart of the town. Staying here means walking out to the monuments and coming back at night along almost empty stone streets.

It is the area couples choose, along with anyone coming for an unhurried weekend. Bring comfortable shoes: the slopes are steep and some streets are closed to cars.

San Roque and the Alameda

At the foot of the old town lies the San Roque district, an 18th-century extension with straight streets and manor houses. Next to it runs the Alameda, a tree-lined promenade with benches and shade, good for some time out with children.

The ground is flat and parking is less of a hassle than up the hill. There are bars, bakeries and everyday shops, and the cathedral is a short walk away. It suits families, older people and anyone who does not want to climb up and down slopes several times a day.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Siguenza, with a score of 8.6 from 2,391 reviews.

Near the train station

Sigüenza station is on the line between Madrid and Zaragoza, on the lower edge of town, close to the Alameda. Staying on the nearby streets saves you hauling your suitcase up the hills if you come without a car. The monumental centre is a short walk away. It is an area of simple, residential streets.

Pelegrina and the Río Dulce gorge

If you want countryside, look at the rural houses in the surrounding villages. Pelegrina, with its ruined castle, overlooks the gorge of the river Dulce, a natural park with trails, rock cliffs and birds of prey. Here you need a car for everything, but in return you sleep in complete silence under a very clear sky.
