Where to stay in Alcázar de San Juan: the best areas
Centre, the Torreón and Santa María
The area between Plaza de España, the Torreón de Don Juan de Austria and the church of Santa María la Mayor has the shops, terraces and many of Alcázar’s restaurants. If you are coming to see the town, everything is on foot here: the museums, the churches and the bars where you can have a La Mancha wine with its tapa.
There is some life at night, especially at weekends, without being noisy. The shopping streets leading off the square are the place to buy local cheese and wine.
0The station district
Alcázar is one of Spain’s great railway junctions, and the station still receives trains from several directions. The surrounding streets have simple bars and a neighbourhood feel. It suits you if you are changing trains or want to take day trips without driving. The centre is within walking distance.
Cerro de San Antón
On top of the Cerro de San Antón stands a line of white windmills overlooking the plain and the town’s rooftops. The streets climbing up there are quiet and a stroll from the centre. You will like it if you fancy watching the sunset by the windmills and walking back to dinner. It is also a pleasant spot for an early walk, when hardly anyone is around.
Town entrances and the roads out
At the entrances to town there are places with ample parking and direct access to the regional roads. They are the option for those touring Cervantes’ La Mancha by car, going somewhere different each day: the Campo de Criptana windmills, El Toboso or Consuegra. The lagoons to the north, with La Veguilla and its birds, are also within easy reach without crossing the centre.
