Where to stay in Almagro: the best areas

Plaza Mayor and the Corral de Comedias

Almagro’s Plaza Mayor is long and lined with green glazed galleries above stone arcades. On one side is the Corral de Comedias, a 17th-century theatre that still stages plays. Very close are the National Theatre Museum and bars with terraces where you can try Almagro aubergines. Sleeping by the square is for those who want to go out to dinner and stroll back in two minutes.

Best-rated in this area: RETIRO DEL TEATRO Hotel Boutique y Apartamentos en Almagro, with a score of 9.3 from 2,035 reviews.

Streets of convents and palaces

Just a few streets from the square you find mansions with coats of arms, the Fúcares Palace, the convent of the Asunción de Calatrava and the church of Madre de Dios. They are streets of whitewashed houses, with little traffic and silent nights. Many old manor houses are now places to stay, with an inner courtyard and stone doorway, suiting couples or anyone after a quiet weekend.

During the International Classical Theatre Festival the town fills up, so book well ahead for those dates.

Outskirts

On the edges of the old town and on the roads out there are larger hotels with their own parking and, in some cases, a pool. They suit families travelling by car who want to explore the area without driving into the centre.

Campo de Calatrava and Bolaños

Around Almagro spreads the Campo de Calatrava, a volcanic landscape with lagoons and old craters. A few kilometres away, Bolaños de Calatrava has the castle of Doña Berenguela. The rural houses in the area are the option if you prefer open country and silent nights. You will need a car for almost everything, but from here you can also reach Ciudad Real and other villages in the area directly.
