Where to stay in Alcaraz: the best areas
Plaza Mayor and Calle Mayor
If you sleep by the Plaza Mayor, you step outside to the Trinidad and Tardón towers. The village’s few bars and restaurants are concentrated here, and at night the square is quiet and well lit. It is the ideal spot if you are coming for the heritage and want to see everything on foot, without moving the car.
Calle Mayor and the streets that cross it keep stone houses with coats of arms. Some have become rural cottages and guesthouses with few rooms, so book ahead for long weekends or summer.
Best-rated in this area: Hostal Los Rosales, with a score of 8.4 from 689 reviews.
The upper town and castle hill
The streets climbing the Cerro de San Cristóbal are steeper and quieter. Staying here has its reward: views over the rooftops and the mountains, with the castle a short walk uphill. On the other hand, the slopes are steep and in many streets you cannot drive to the door. If you have heavy suitcases or are travelling with older people, better stay lower down.
Village entrance and the N-322
In the lower part, by the N-322 road linking Albacete with Jaén, there are places to stay that are easier to reach by car, with room to park nearby. From here you walk up to the centre in a short while. It suits you if you are stopping overnight on the way to Andalusia or plan to set off early each morning for the mountains.
Vianos and the mountain hamlets
If you are after silence and hills, look at Vianos and the hamlets around Alcaraz. They are small places, with rural cottages surrounded by pine forest and paths to walk from the very door. You will need a car for everything, including dinner, but you are better placed for routes to the source of the river Mundo and the mountain villages.
