Plaza Mayor and the cathedral

The centre is organised around Plaza Mayor, with its clock featuring figures of Cervantes, Don Quixote and Sancho, and the town hall. A few streets away are the cathedral of Santa María del Prado, the church of San Pedro and the Quixote Museum. The pedestrian streets have shops, terraces and tapas bars. It is the most convenient area for a short visit, because you can walk everywhere.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Rey Alfonso X, with a score of 8.6 from 5,522 reviews.

Parque de Gasset

Gasset park is the great green lung of the centre, with walks, fountains and shade in summer. The streets around it are residential and quiet, a short stroll from Plaza Mayor. It is a good area if you are travelling with children or like to start the day with a walk. It is also a good starting point for a run.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Guadiana, with a score of 8.5 from 4,064 reviews.

By the high-speed station

The train station is east of the centre, on the high-speed line between Madrid and Andalusia. Staying nearby is very practical for business trips or a single night. From here you can walk to the centre or take a taxi at the station. The surroundings have wide streets and parking is easier than in the centre.

La Ronda and Puerta de Toledo

La Ronda rings the centre along the line of the old wall. On its northern stretch stands the Puerta de Toledo, the only remnant of that wall. Places to stay on La Ronda are convenient if you are driving, because you can enter and leave the city without going through the centre.

From here the roads lead to Almagro and its corral de comedias theatre, and to Cabañeros National Park. You will need a car for these trips, as public transport to the villages is scarce.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Rey Alfonso X, with a score of 8.6 from 5,522 reviews.
