What to see in Jarandilla de la Vera

Must-sees

Jarandilla de la Vera sits on the southern slope of the Sierra de Gredos, surrounded by oaks, chestnuts and pepper fields. Its best-known building is the 15th-century castle of the Counts of Oropesa, where Emperor Charles V stayed for several months while his quarters at the monastery of Yuste were being finished. Today it is a parador, and its courtyard and towers give an idea of how the nobility lived.

In the old town stands the fortress-like church of Santa María de la Torre with its sturdy tower. The streets keep typical La Vera houses, with timber framing and overhanging balconies. The best thing about the area is the water: the Garganta de Jaranda flows down from the mountains, forming pools and natural swimming spots that are very popular in summer. The Parral bridge, of medieval origin, crosses the gorge.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Jarandilla. Most people explore on their own and, if they want background, ask at the tourist office about guided tours of the village. The monastery of Yuste, a few kilometres away, offers guided tours of the emperor’s rooms and is the main stop in the area.

The area is good for several excursions. You can visit villages such as Cuacos de Yuste, Valverde de la Vera or Garganta la Olla, with their timber architecture, and join guided hikes through the gorges. There are also visits to paprika drying houses and trips to Monfragüe National Park or to the Jerte valley, on the other side of the mountains.

How long to spend

Jarandilla can be seen in a morning, but the point is to use it as a base. With two days you can see the village, swim in the gorge and visit Yuste. With three or four days you add the villages of La Vera and a mountain route. In summer everything revolves around the pools, and in autumn the chestnuts and oaks change colour and the countryside is lovely for walking.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the castle-turned-parador is the option with the most history, and it is right in the village. In and around the old town there are guesthouses and small hotels a short walk from the bars and shops. If you are travelling by car and want peace, the rural cottages and apartments on the outskirts, near the gorge, let you walk to the natural pools with the mountains beside you.
