Where to stay in Ansó: the best areas

Ansó old town

The village is small and everything is close at hand: the church of San Pedro with the museum of the traditional Ansó costume, the stone streets and the valley's handful of bars and restaurants. Staying here lets you stroll the streets once the day-trippers' cars have gone and have dinner without driving back along the river road.

It's the option for those who come to see the village and do short walks. The Foz de Biniés gorge lies to the south along the same road, and the rest of the valley has to be explored by car, as there is no public transport that works for getting between hikes.

Zuriza and the head of the Veral valley

Following the Veral north, the road ends at Zuriza, a meadow ringed by beech woods and peaks. There is very little accommodation, aimed more at mountaineers than at those after comfort, but you wake up at the foot of the trails to Linza and the Mesa de los Tres Reyes. If you're stringing together several days of hiking or snowshoeing, you save yourself the drive there and back every morning.

Hecho and Siresa

The neighbouring valley has more on offer and is linked to Ansó by road through Fago. Hecho keeps stone houses very similar to those of Ansó, and a little further up is Siresa, with the Romanesque church of San Pedro, once part of an old monastery. Following the Aragón Subordán river you reach the Boca del Infierno gorge and the Selva de Oza forest.

This base works if you want to split your days between the two valleys or can't find a room in Ansó during fiesta dates.

Fago

A tiny hamlet between the two valleys, halfway between Ansó and Hecho. Its appeal is the silence and the views over the forests of the Valles Occidentales nature park. There is very little on offer, so treat it as an alternative for those who prefer somewhere without services and don't mind driving to eat.
