Old Town and the cathedral

Central Jaca is quick to explore on foot. Around the cathedral of San Pedro and Calle Mayor are the Clock Tower, long-established shops and many streets with tapas bars. Staying here lets you eat and go out without taking the car, welcome after a day in the snow. It is the liveliest area, especially in winter and summer. On high-season weekends the atmosphere goes on late.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel & Spa Real Jaca, with a score of 8.3 from 3,928 reviews.

The Citadel and Paseo de la Constitución

Beside the centre stands the Citadel, a pentagonal fortress surrounded by a moat and green spaces where deer are often seen. The nearby streets and Paseo de la Constitución are quieter, with mountain views and flat walks. It is a good choice for families and anyone who wants the centre close by but a quiet night. The ice rink is also nearby.

Best-rated in this area: PURA VIDA PIRINEOS, with a score of 9.8 from 1,041 reviews.

Castiello de Jaca and Villanúa

Heading up the Aragón valley towards France, these two villages put you closer to Astún and Candanchú. They are small, with stone houses and a more rural mountain feel. Villanúa has the Güixas cave, which you can visit. They suit skiers who want a shorter drive each morning and walkers in summer.

Canfranc

At the head of the valley, Canfranc Estación is the last stop before the slopes. Here is the old international station, a huge building that has become one of the best-known sights in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The railway from Jaca runs this far. It is the most practical base for skiing, although restaurants and services are more limited than in Jaca. The Candanchú cross-country ski area and summer mountain routes are also close by.
