Where to stay in Canfranc: the best areas

Canfranc-Estación

The district that grew up around the great international station lies at the bottom of the Arañones valley, a step from the French border. Here you have the station building, the riverside walk along the Aragón and the trails up to the Fusileros tower and the Coll de Ladrones fort.

It is the area with the most services in the municipality: restaurants, shops and apartments. Regional trains from Zaragoza, Huesca and Jaca end here, so you can arrive without a car. In winter you are a few kilometres from the slopes.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel & Spa Real Villa Anayet, with a score of 8.5 from 2,700 reviews.

Candanchú and Astún

Heading up towards the Somport pass you reach the two ski resorts. Candanchú has apartment buildings and ski-in accommodation. Astún, a little more secluded in its own valley, also has apartment blocks beside the lifts. Sleeping here means putting your boots on and being on the slopes straight away.

Out of season these resorts empty out and most services close.

Canfranc village

A few kilometres down the valley is the original village, smaller and quieter, beside the road and the Aragonese Way of St James, which comes down from Somport. It is chosen by pilgrims and by anyone who prefers a mountain village atmosphere, away from the winter bustle. From here it is a short drive up to the station, and the Camino path links both places.

Villanúa

Further south, Villanúa is a lively village with a good choice of houses and apartments. Here you can visit the Güixas cave. It is halfway between Jaca and the slopes, and practical for families combining snow and excursions around the Jacetania. It has bars and shops that depend less on the ski season, and the village station is on the same line as Canfranc.
