Staying near the Puerta de Alcalá: what you need to know

What is the Puerta de Alcalá?

The Puerta de Alcalá is the monumental gate commissioned by Charles III and completed by Francesco Sabatini in 1778. It stands in Plaza de la Independencia, beside one of the main entrances to the Retiro, and is part of the Landscape of Light, a World Heritage Site since 2021.

Getting around from here

Retiro (line 2) is on the square itself, and Banco de España, at Cibeles, five minutes away. Calle Serrano starts here heading north, and the Prado Museum is about ten minutes’ walk away.

When rooms are hardest to find

At Christmas, Easter and on long weekends, and in late May and early June during the Book Fair in the Retiro. Fun runs starting or finishing in the park also fill the area on some Sundays.

Which area to choose

To the north begins the Salamanca district, with upmarket hotels; to the west, Cibeles and the centre; to the south, the Retiro and Los Jerónimos. This page looks up to 500 metres from the gate.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Madrid city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Madrid.
