What is the Barrio de las Letras?

The Barrio de las Letras, or Literary Quarter, also known as Huertas, covers the streets between the Puerta del Sol and the Paseo del Prado. Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngora lived here, and Calle Huertas has lines from their works set into the pavement. Lope de Vega’s House Museum, the Teatro Español on Plaza de Santa Ana and the Spanish Parliament, on its northern edge, are its landmarks.

Getting around from here

Sol (lines 1, 2 and 3 and Cercanías), Sevilla (line 2) and Antón Martín (line 1) surround the district. Atocha is about ten minutes’ walk down Huertas or the Paseo del Prado, and the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía museums are five.

When rooms are hardest to find

At weekends, when Huertas and Santa Ana fill with people going out, and on the long weekends and holidays when Madrid is busiest with tourists. Big trade fair weeks at IFEMA also push up prices across the centre.
