What is Malasaña?

Malasaña is the popular name for the Universidad district, between Gran Vía, Calle Fuencarral, San Bernardo and Carranza. It is named after Manuela Malasaña, one of the heroines of the uprising of 2 May 1808, and its heart is Plaza del Dos de Mayo. It was the centre of the Movida in the 1980s and today is full of bars, vintage shops, cafés and bookshops; the Conde Duque cultural centre is on its western edge.

Getting around from here

Tribunal (lines 1 and 10), Noviciado (line 2), Bilbao (1 and 4) and San Bernardo (2 and 4) are on its edges. Gran Vía and Callao are five minutes’ walk away, and Sol ten. From Atocha, line 1 reaches Tribunal without changing.

At weekends, when the district fills with people going out at night, and during the Dos de Mayo festivities in early May. Big trade fair weeks at IFEMA and long weekends also push up prices across the centre.
