What is the Baixa?

It is the centre of Lisbon, rebuilt on a grid after the 1755 earthquake, between Praça do Comércio and the Rossio, with Rua Augusta and the Santa Justa lift.

Getting there

From Baixa-Chiado the metro reaches the airport with one change. Trams 28 and 12 climb to Alfama, and Cais do Sodré station, next door, has trains to Belém and Cascais.

When rooms are hardest to find

From April to October, in June during the Lisbon festivals, and at Christmas. It is the most sought-after area of the city.
