What is the Chiado?

It is the elegant district between the Baixa and the Bairro Alto, with the A Brasileira café, old bookshops, theatres and shops. At night, the Bairro Alto, a step away, fills with bars.

Getting there

Baixa-Chiado station (blue and green metro lines) is in the district. Tram 28 passes through Largo Luís de Camões, and the Santa Justa lift climbs up from the Baixa.

When rooms are hardest to find

From May to October, during the June festivals and at Christmas. The hotels are small and fill up early.

Which area to choose

Near Largo do Chiado is the most central part. Towards the Bairro Alto there is more nightlife, and towards Cais do Sodré you are closer to the river and the Cascais train.
