What to see in Alcaraz

Must-sees

Alcaraz is a mountain town in south-west Albacete with a very complete Renaissance historic centre. Its heart is the Plaza Mayor, where two towers stand side by side, the Trinidad and the Tardón, forming the best-known image of the place. On the same square are the Lonja del Corregidor and other stone buildings. The architect Andrés de Vandelvira was born here.

Leave the square along Calle Mayor, with noble house portals and coats of arms. The streets climb towards the Cerro de San Cristóbal, where the remains of the castle and walls survive. From the top you see the village and the mountains. Alcaraz was famous for its carpets, which are still part of its identity today. The surroundings invite you to combine heritage and nature.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Alcaraz. The norm is guided tours of the historic centre, sometimes organised by the town council itself or by local guides. The most interesting excursions head into the Sierra de Alcaraz and, above all, to the source of the river Mundo, near Riópar, with its waterfall. Another option is to spend a day at the Lagunas de Ruidera, about an hour and a half away by car.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the village: one for the square and Calle Mayor and another to climb to the castle at a relaxed pace. If you add the mountains and the river Mundo, allow a full weekend. That way you can spend one day on heritage and another walking in nature.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep in central Alcaraz, near the Plaza Mayor, so you can explore on foot at dusk. The choice is small and almost entirely rural cottages and guesthouses. If your plan centres on the mountains, Riópar and the nearby villages have more rural accommodation and are next to the hiking trails.
