Where to stay in Segura de la Sierra: the best areas

Segura old town

The village clings to a hillside below the castle at more than a thousand metres. If you stay inside it, the Arab baths, the parish church of El Collado and the curious bullring carved into the rock are right beside you. Rural houses are usually old stone homes with fireplaces. It suits couples and history lovers, who appreciate watching the sunset from the tower without taking the car. In winter it gets properly cold, so make sure the house has good heating.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamentos Sierra de Segura, with a score of 9.1 from 877 reviews.

Orcera

At the foot of the mountain, Orcera is the liveliest village in the valley, with supermarkets, bars and a pharmacy. The road up to Segura starts here and the drive is short. It's a good choice for families and longer stays, as daily needs are easy to sort out and you can visit Segura whenever you like. After a day in the hills, you have places to eat and shop without more kilometres of bends.

La Puerta de Segura

By the Guadalimar river, La Puerta de Segura is the natural gateway to the sierra from the Puente de Génave area. Its centre is flat, with shops, bars and restaurants serving mountain cooking. It suits you if you're arriving from the A-4 motorway or from Albacete and would rather not drive mountain bends at night.

Hornos and the Tranco reservoir

To the south, Hornos looks out from a crag over the Tranco reservoir, with a castle and a small medieval centre. It has few beds, but suits those spending several days inside the nature park: hiking, deer watching in autumn and walks along the reservoir shores. From here you reach the source of the Guadalquivir and the Cazorla area more quickly.
