What to see in Alcázar de San Juan

Must-sees

Alcázar de San Juan is one of the main towns of La Mancha and a historic railway junction. In the centre stand the Torreón de Don Juan de Austria, linked to the Order of St John, and the church of Santa María la Mayor, the oldest in town. Very close is the Archaeological Museum, with Roman mosaics found locally.

On the Cerro de San Antón several windmills survive, with views over the plain and the town. In the north of the municipality is the Alcázar lagoon complex, with La Veguilla, a wetland where many birds can be seen, especially in winter and spring. The Hidalgo Museum, in a traditional La Mancha house, completes the visit.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are scarce in Alcázar. Guided visits to the Torreón and the museums, and occasional walks through the historic centre, are more common. The town is a good base for Cervantes’ La Mancha. The most interesting trips go to the Campo de Criptana windmills, El Toboso, with Dulcinea’s house, and Consuegra, with its castle and row of windmills. For nature, walks around the lagoons are the quietest option.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in a day. Spend the morning on the centre, the Torreón and the museums, and the afternoon on the San Antón windmills and the lagoons, which have the best light at sunset. With two or three days you can add Campo de Criptana, El Toboso and Consuegra, a short drive away.

Where to stay

Stay in the centre, between Plaza de España and the Torreón, where the town’s life is, to walk to the monuments and restaurants. If you arrive by train, the station area is also convenient and a short walk from the centre. To explore the area you will need a car.
