What to see in Avilés

Must-sees

Avilés surprises with one of the best-preserved historic centres in Asturias. Calle Galiana, with its arcades and long row of houses, is one of the most photographed streets. Plaza de España brings together the town hall and the Ferrera Palace, beside the park of the same name, a large garden for a rest. Nearby are the church of San Nicolás de Bari and Plaza del Carbayedo, with its traditional houses.

On the other side of the centre, the Sabugo quarter, once home to fishermen, keeps the old church of Santo Tomás de Canterbury and a very local feel. Facing the estuary stands the Niemeyer Centre, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Its white, curving forms contrast with the city’s industrial past. It is a good place for a stroll, an exhibition or a concert.

Free tours and guided visits

Avilés has pay-what-you-wish free tours of the historic centre, covering Galiana, Plaza de España, Sabugo and the town’s story, from medieval port to steel city. There are also guided visits to the Niemeyer Centre. Trips run from here to the coast, such as Cabo Peñas or Salinas beach, and to Oviedo and Gijón, both very close.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the historic centre, Sabugo and the Niemeyer Centre. Spend the morning in the centre and the afternoon by the estuary. With two or three days you can use Avilés as a base and combine the city with a trip to the coast and another to Oviedo or Gijón. Its location is very practical, and Asturias airport is very close.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is the historic centre, between Plaza de España, Galiana and Ferrera park. Everything is close at hand, including the bars and cider houses of the centre. The Niemeyer Centre is a short walk away. If you prefer the beach, Salinas is a quiet alternative, although you will need a car or bus to come into the centre.
