Staying near King’s Cross: what you need to know

What is King’s Cross?

King’s Cross and St Pancras are two railway stations side by side. Trains to York, Newcastle and Edinburgh leave from King’s Cross, home of Harry Potter’s Platform 9¾; the Eurostar to Paris and Brussels leaves from St Pancras. Around them, the old warehouses of Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square are now full of shops and restaurants.

Getting around from here

With six Tube lines, you can reach Oxford Circus, Covent Garden, Leicester Square and the City without changing in under ten minutes, and the Piccadilly line runs straight to Heathrow. On foot, the British Museum is about fifteen minutes away.

When the hotels fill up

Hotels here fill up on weekdays with business travellers and on Friday and Sunday evenings with people catching or arriving on the Eurostar. If your train leaves early, staying here saves you the Tube with your luggage.

Which area to choose

Next to the stations there are large hotels and a few design ones, including the hotel in the St Pancras building itself. To the south, in Bloomsbury, Georgian streets have smaller, cheaper hotels within walking distance of the British Museum. To the north, the new King’s Cross quarter is modern and quiet at night.
