Staying near Amsterdam Central Station: what you need to know
What is the central station?
Amsterdam Centraal is the city’s grand neo-Renaissance station, on an artificial island facing the IJ. Domestic trains, the Eurostar and ICE trains to Germany all stop here, and it is the gateway to the old centre.
Getting around from here
Dam Square is ten minutes’ walk down the Damrak, and the Red Light District and the Jordaan five to ten. The free ferries cross the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord and A’DAM Tower in a few minutes.
When the hotels fill up
Amsterdam is expensive all year, and on King’s Day (27 April), in tulip season and during big conferences central hotels sell out. Around the station there is usually a little more choice.
Which area to choose
Hotels on the station side and along the Damrak are handy for arriving by train. Across the IJ, in Noord, there are cheaper modern hotels five minutes away by ferry.
