Staying near the Red Light District: what you need to know

What is the Red Light District?

De Wallen is Amsterdam’s oldest quarter, around the Oude Kerk, with canals, 17th-century houses, coffeeshops and the windows that give it its name.

Getting around from here

Dam Square, Central Station and the Nieuwmarkt are a few minutes’ walk away. The whole centre can be explored on foot from here.

When the hotels fill up

At weekends, on King’s Day and at New Year hotels in the district fill up, and at night the main streets are very noisy.

Which area to choose

Hotels on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal canals are in the thick of it. Towards the Nieuwmarkt and Chinatown it is a little quieter.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Amsterdam city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Amsterdam.
