Where to stay in Son Bou: the best areas

Son Bou seafront

Facing the long stretch of sand on Menorca’s south coast are the buildings closest to the water, with direct access to the beach. The sand is fine and the sea shelves gently in many places, although a red flag may go up when there is a swell. At the eastern end of the beach are the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Son Bou and some caves cut into the cliff. This area is a favourite with families who want the sand a step from their room.

Behind the dunes lies the Son Bou marsh, a wetland with reeds and waterbirds that should be respected.

Sant Jaume Mediterrani

Behind the wetland, this development has apartments, villas, supermarkets and bars. Many places to stay have a kitchen and terrace, designed for week-long stays, and it is linked to the beach by paths and wooden boardwalks. It suits families with children and groups who prefer to have services close by. To get out of the area you will need a car or the buses that link the coast with Alaior in season.

Torre Soli Nou and Cala Llucalari

On the hill to the west, Torre Soli Nou is a hillside development of villas and apartments, with views over the whole beach. From here you can walk down to Cala Llucalari, a small pebble cove surrounded by cliffs and with no facilities. It is the quietest part of Son Bou, good for couples and anyone who likes very silent nights. The streets are sloping and a car is almost essential for going out to dinner or shopping.

Alaior, the town Son Bou belongs to, is inland along the road up to the main highway. There you have local life, shops and village festivals, and a central location for exploring Menorca from end to end.
