Historic centre

Mahón’s old town sits on top of the cliff above the harbour. If you stay here, you will be close to the church of Santa María, Plaça d’Espanya, the Claustre del Carme market and shopping streets such as Ses Moreres. At night the squares have quiet terraces and a local atmosphere. It suits people travelling without a car who want to explore the town on foot, also outside summer, when Mahón carries on with its life as a capital.

The harbour

Along the Ponent and Llevant quays there is one restaurant, bar and boat-trip jetty after another. Staying on this strip by the water means waking up to views of the yachts and having dinner on the quayside. To get up to the centre there are stairways such as the Costa de ses Voltes, which are quite steep. It is for couples and anyone who puts nightlife first.

Es Castell

Es Castell is a separate town next to Mahón, on the south shore of the harbour. It keeps the military grid of the British period around the Esplanada square. Its Cales Fonts inlet is lined with restaurants in old fishermen’s houses. From here you can go to La Mola fortress and Fort Marlborough. It appeals to people looking for somewhere smaller and calmer, with Mahón centre very close.

Sant Lluís and S’Algar

To the south, Sant Lluís is a white town of straight streets, with a windmill and good restaurants. Towards the coast are developments such as S’Algar, with platforms for swimming off the rocks and villas with pools. It is the choice for families and groups who hire a car and want the coves of the south coast close by. To get around that area, a car is almost essential.
