Old town
Inside the old walled enclosure you have the cathedral, Plaça des Born, stately palaces and the arcades of Ses Voltes. Staying here means living the town at night, when the stone streets fill with people strolling after dinner. It is almost entirely pedestrianised and cars enter with restrictions. It suits anyone who wants culture, shopping and dinners without the car. During the Sant Joan festival it is the main stage and fills up completely.

The harbour
The harbour is a long, narrow inlet, with restaurants in the old fishermen’s houses below the walls. At night there are bars and the odd venue with music on the quays. Staying nearby puts you between the old town and Sant Nicolau castle, where people gather to watch the sunset. It is a good spot for couples and travellers looking for atmosphere.
Cala en Blanes and Cala en Forcat
West of the town, these two small coves with calm water are surrounded by developments such as Los Delfines, with apartment complexes with pools. There are supermarkets, restaurants and a family holiday atmosphere. The coves are narrow and fill up fast in summer, so get there early. In return, at dusk you can watch the sun set over the sea from the rocks, looking towards Majorca.

Cala en Bosc and Son Xoriguer
On the island’s south-western tip, Cala en Bosc has a marina ringed by terraces, with Son Xoriguer beach a step away. Boats leave from here along the south coast to coves such as Macarella and Turqueta. It is a sun-and-beach holiday area designed for families. There are buses to Ciutadella, but a car gives you more freedom.
