Inside the walls

Lugo’s historic centre fits inside its Roman walls, so staying here puts everything a few steps away. You have the cathedral, the Praza Maior with the town hall and the Praza do Campo, one of the oldest squares in the city. Along Rúa Nova and Rúa da Cruz is the wine quarter, with tapas bars, octopus and Ribeira Sacra wine. It is the ideal choice for a short break without a car.

Ronda da Muralla

The Ronda circles the walls on the outside, and much of the accommodation is along its streets. From here you climb onto the wall-walk through any of its gates and walk all the way round the city on top. Praza da Constitución, with the bus station, is on this ring, and the train station is a short walk away. It is practical if you arrive by public transport or need to park nearby.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel EsteOeste, with a score of 9.3 from 2,482 reviews.

Rosalía de Castro park

Next to the Porta de Santiago, Rosalía de Castro park is a viewpoint over the Miño valley, with a pond, gardens and a play area. The surrounding streets are quiet and right next to the walls and the cathedral. They suit families who want some greenery without leaving the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Gran Hotel Lugo, with a score of 9.1 from 4,547 reviews.

By the Miño and the Roman bridge

Down by the river are the Roman bridge, the Roman baths and the riverside walk, ideal for running or walking. It is the calmest area, surrounded by nature. The drawback is the slope: getting back to the old town means a stiff climb, so think twice if you are travelling with small children or older people. In return, you get silence and waterside walks at the start and end of the day.
