El Pilar and La Seo

Sleeping by the Plaza del Pilar puts you next to the great monuments: the basilica, La Seo cathedral, La Lonja and the Puente de Piedra over the Ebro. Under the square is the Caesaraugusta Forum Museum. It is a large pedestrian area, very convenient for a first visit and for seeing the basilica lit up at night. Cross the Puente de Piedra and you can see the Pilar reflected in the Ebro from the other bank.

El Tubo and La Magdalena

El Tubo is the maze of narrow streets between Plaza de España and Calle Alfonso I. This is where people go out for tapas, so it is your area if you want atmosphere. A little further east is La Magdalena, with its Mudéjar church and a more alternative feel, with small bars and terraces.

Both areas are busy at night. If you are a light sleeper, ask for an inside room.

Best-rated in this area: Silken Reino de Aragón, with a score of 8.7 from 7,967 reviews.

Independencia and Plaza de Aragón

The Paseo de la Independencia links Plaza de España with Plaza de Aragón. It is the shopping and business centre, with arcades, department stores and the tram line, which takes you to the Pilar or to the north bank of the Ebro. It suits business travellers or anyone who likes wide streets, and the Paseo Sagasta is close by. The José Antonio Labordeta park is a little further, but makes a good walk.

Aljafería and Delicias

West of the centre is the Aljafería palace, now home to the Aragonese parliament and open to visitors. Beyond it begins Delicias, a large residential district with the high-speed train and bus stations. It can work for a one-night stopover or a late train arrival, but to get to know the city the centre is a better bet. From the station, a bus or taxi gets you to the centre quickly.

Best-rated in this area: VTZ The Orus Factory Hotel - Parking Muy Económico, with a score of 8.1 from 7,828 reviews.
