Where to stay in Alcalá de la Selva: the best areas

The village below the castle

Alcalá de la Selva gathers around a crag crowned by its castle, with stone streets and mountain houses. Staying in the village puts bars, shops and restaurants close at hand after skiing or walking. It is liveliest in winter and summer, when families come to spend time in the Sierra de Gúdar.

In winter there may be snow and ice in the streets. Carry chains in the car and warm clothes, even outside the ski season. In summer, on the other hand, the nights are cool and pleasant, without the heat of the coast.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel La Vega, with a score of 7.8 from 44 reviews.

Virgen de la Vega

A few kilometres away, by the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Vega, a development of apartments and chalets designed for the snow has grown up. It is the part of the municipality closest to the Valdelinares ski resort, so it is popular with skiers who want to get to the slopes early. Out of season it is very quiet and some services close. If you go in high season, buy the basics before going up and check the road report.

Gúdar

The village of Gúdar, which gives its name to the range, is very close. It is small, silent and surrounded by pine forest, with rural houses and little traffic. It suits you if you are looking for hiking, mushrooms in autumn or rest, without the bustle of ski weekends. Paths lead from Gúdar into the pine forests and the farmhouses of the range, good for walks with children.

Mora de Rubielos

A little further, Mora de Rubielos has more accommodation and services, a large castle-palace and an old town to stroll. It is a convenient alternative if you are travelling with children or want to combine Valdelinares with Javalambre: it lies between the two resorts. You will need a car for the whole trip, including getting to the slopes.
