Where to stay in Albarracín: the best areas

Old town

Albarracín is perched on a bend of the river Guadalaviar, with its wall climbing the hill. Inside the old town are houses with reddish façades, wooden balconies, the cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and corners such as the Casa de la Julianeta. For sleeping there are restored mansions and inns with few rooms, many with views over the rooftops and the river gorge.

Spending the night here is rewarded: at dusk the day visitors leave and the town falls silent. Wear comfortable shoes, because the ground is cobbled and everything goes up or down. The car stays in the car parks below and the suitcases go up by hand.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Doña Blanca, with a score of 8.6 from 4,610 reviews.

El Arrabal and the riverside

At the foot of the old town, beside the Guadalaviar, the Arrabal quarter and the area along the approach road are flatter. There are places to stay with parking alongside and easy access for those travelling with small children or someone who tires on the slopes. The riverside walk that circles the town starts here, and you are soon in the square.

Pinares de Rodeno

To the south-east, the Rodeno nature area mixes red sandstone rocks, pine forest and signposted rock shelters with cave paintings. The rural houses around it are for those who come to walk, climb or stargaze, always by car. At night there is hardly any artificial light and the sky is very clear.

Guadalaviar valley

Upstream, Torres de Albarracín and Tramacastilla are mountain villages with rural houses, close to mountain routes and the source of the Tagus, further west in the sierra. Downstream, Gea de Albarracín has services and lies on the way to Teruel, handy if you want to combine both visits.
