Old town and the Colegiata

The old town spreads out below the hills crowned by the Moorish castles. Here you will find the collegiate church of Santa María, with its Mudéjar tower, a World Heritage Site, and the church of San Pedro de los Francos. Staying in this part lets you climb to the viewpoints of the Ayub castle first thing, before the heat sets in.

The streets are narrow and steep, so if you arrive by car ask in advance where to park.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Monasterio Benedictino, with a score of 8.6 from 2,820 reviews.

Plaza del Fuerte and La Rúa

Plaza del Fuerte is the town’s meeting point, and from it the Calle de la Rúa crosses the centre with shops, bars and noble buildings. In this area you can have tapas for dinner and walk everywhere. It is the best fit for a weekend break without a car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Monasterio Benedictino, with a score of 8.6 from 2,820 reviews.

Along the river Jalón

The river Jalón runs beside the town, with walks, market gardens and riverside parks. The newer streets growing between the centre and the river have holiday flats and places to stay where parking is easier than in the old town. They suit families and groups looking for space within walking distance of Plaza del Fuerte.

The station and the A-2 approaches

Calatayud has a high-speed station on the Madrid–Zaragoza line, and around it and at the A-2 motorway exits there are roadside hotels with easy parking. They work for an overnight stop on a long journey or as a base for exploring the area by car.

From here it is easy to reach the Monasterio de Piedra in Nuévalos, or the Roman ruins of Bilbilis on the Cerro de Bámbola, by Huérmeda. The Calatayud designation of origin Garnacha wineries are close too.
