Riaño village

Present-day Riaño was built in the 1980s on a hillside above the reservoir, when the water covered the old village. It is the place with the most services in the area: shops, bars, a petrol station and almost all the restaurants. From its streets you see the reservoir and the surrounding peaks, with Pico Yordas very close.

Sleeping here puts the lakeside walks and water activities, such as kayaking or paddleboarding, within walking distance. It suits couples or families who want everything at hand without depending on the car for dinner.

Boca de Huérgano and Tierra de la Reina

To the east, following the road towards the San Glorio pass and Cantabria, is Boca de Huérgano, the gateway to the Tierra de la Reina valley. It is a small village of stone houses and meadows, with few beds and plenty of calm. It suits you if you want to walk in the valley and combine the visit with Liébana.

Burón and the Pontón road

At the northern end of the reservoir, Burón sits on the road up to the Pontón pass, the route to Sajambre and Asturias. From here you approach the Picos de Europa from the Oseja de Sajambre side and, further on, Valdeón. It is the option for anyone wanting real mountains who doesn’t mind driving over passes.

Pedrosa del Rey, Salamón and Lois

To the south and west of the reservoir are scattered villages with rural cottages and apartments. Pedrosa del Rey is beside one of the bridges across the reservoir. More remote, Salamón and Lois hide the church of Lois, known as the cathedral of the mountains for its size and stonework.

In all of them a car is essential and the nights are very quiet. Bring a coat even in summer, as at this altitude it cools down as soon as the sun sets.
