What to see in Riópar

Must-sees

Riópar is in the Sierra de Alcaraz, in Albacete, and its great attraction is the source of the river Mundo, Los Chorros, a few kilometres away. The water bursts from a cave high on the Calar del Mundo and tumbles in waterfalls among the pines. Walkways and viewpoints let you see it up close, and occasionally the so-called reventón occurs, when the flow surges dramatically.

In the village are the Royal Factories of San Juan de Alcaraz, founded in the 18th century and among the first brass works in Spain. Their museum explains the place’s industrial history. It is also worth going up to Riópar Viejo, the old village, with its church and castle ruins above the valley.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Riópar. The usual options are guided visits to the Royal Factories museum and guided hikes in the sierra, such as the river Mundo source route along the paths around the waterfall and the Calar viewpoints. For nearby trips, you can visit Ayna, with its viewpoints over the Mundo canyon, Yeste and its castle, or tour the villages of the Sierra del Segura.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the source of the Mundo and the village: the morning for Los Chorros, when there are fewer people, and the afternoon for the Royal Factories and Riópar Viejo. With two or three days you can add a mountain walk and a trip to Ayna or Yeste.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay in Riópar itself, near the Royal Factories, where the services and restaurants are, a few minutes’ drive from the source. If you prefer more calm, there are rural houses and places to stay along the river Mundo and in small mountain hamlets, ideal for early walks and silent nights.
