What is Edinburgh Castle?
Edinburgh Castle crowns the volcanic rock where the city began. Inside are the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh. The Royal Mile starts at its esplanade and runs down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Getting around from here
The Old Town is best explored on foot: the Royal Mile, the Grassmarket and the National Museum of Scotland are less than ten minutes away. Down through Princes Street Gardens you reach the New Town and Waverley station. The tram goes to the airport in about half an hour.
When the hotels fill up
In August, with the Fringe and the Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade itself, central hotels sell out months ahead and prices soar. Hogmanay, the New Year celebration, is also busy. From November to March it is easier and cheaper.
Which area to choose
On the Royal Mile and in the Grassmarket you sleep a step from the castle, in old buildings, with pubs and some noise at night. The New Town, across the gardens, has hotels in Georgian houses and quieter streets. The West End and Haymarket, a short walk away, are usually cheaper.
