Where to stay in Montanejos: the best areas

Montanejos village

Montanejos is a small village set beside the river Mijares, between rock walls. In the village you have the square, the church, the bars and the restaurants serving mountain cooking, all a few steps away. At weekends and in summer it fills with bathers, hikers and climbers, as its limestone walls are well known among climbers. Sleeping here lets you walk to almost everything and have dinner without the car.

The road to the Fuente de los Baños

From the village, the road up the Mijares leads to the Fuente de los Baños, the warm-water pool that made the place famous. Very close is the Estrecho de Chillapájaros, a narrow gorge visible from the road itself. Places to stay on this side leave you a few minutes from the water, ideal for an early swim before the crowds arrive.

Arañuel, Cirat and Montán

The neighbouring villages of the Alto Mijares are even smaller and quieter, with rural cottages and apartments in stone buildings. Arañuel and Cirat are by the river, and Montán is in a nearby valley. You will have to get around by car, but in return you sleep in total silence with the mountains at the door. They suit groups and families renting a whole house. Before booking, check which shops and bars open in each village, as there is little on offer in low season.

The Arenós reservoir

Upriver, the Arenós reservoir opens up the landscape between hills, with Puebla de Arenoso overlooking the water. Accommodation here is scarce and mostly rural, for anyone after isolation, walking or cycling routes and clear night skies. For shopping and most restaurants you will rely on Montanejos.
