Where to stay in Morella: the best areas
Upper town, by the basilica
The upper part of the walled town is the most monumental. Here you have the basilica of Santa María la Mayor, the convent of San Francisco and the path up to the castle, with the best views over Els Ports. The streets are steep and cobbled, and at night, when the day-trippers leave, there is total silence. It is worth it if you are coming to see the town calmly and don’t mind slopes.
Calle Blasco de Alagón and the arcades
Calle Blasco de Alagón crosses Morella under its arcades and gathers shops selling local produce, pastry shops with flaons and restaurants. Nearby is the town hall, in a Gothic building. Sleeping here puts you in the middle of village life, with bars for a drink and the best tables for trying Els Ports cooking. Houses and guesthouses often occupy old buildings with narrow stairs.
Outside the walls and the gateways
At the foot of the wall and by gateways such as Sant Miquel there are places to stay with easier car access. It is a real advantage, because driving and parking inside the walls is difficult. From here you walk into the old town in a few minutes, and the old Gothic aqueduct of Santa Llúcia is close by. It suits anyone arriving with luggage or planning trips around the area.
Els Ports farmhouses
Morella’s municipality is very large, and its hills are dotted with stone farmhouses turned rural cottages. You need a car and some patience with winding roads, but you gain space, scenery and very dark nights. They make a comfortable base for touring the area’s villages and hiking trails. Winter is genuinely cold and it can snow, so ask about heating and the state of the access track.
