Where to stay in Lyon: the best areas

Presqu’île

Between the Rhône and the Saône, from Bellecour to the Terreaux, there are hotels of every category and apartments in classic buildings, many with views of the quays. It is the most convenient base: shops, restaurants and the metro are close at hand, and Vieux Lyon is across the bridge.

Vieux Lyon and Fourvière

The Renaissance quarter has charming hotels and apartments in old houses, with the traboules and bouchons on the doorstep. The funicular climbs to Fourvière in a few minutes. It is very busy by day, and some streets are cobbled and buildings have no lift.

Part-Dieu

Around the big railway station and its shopping centre there are plenty of modern and chain hotels, practical if you arrive by train or on the airport shuttle. It is a little away from the historic centre, but the metro and tram connect it quickly.

Croix-Rousse

On the hill of the old silk weavers there are mostly apartments and small places to stay, with a market, terraces and city views from its viewpoints. It is a quiet district with local life, linked to the centre by metro and by stairways down to the Presqu’île.
